Lithuania Aims to Fully Restore Conscription by 2030

Lithuania may implement a full conscription system before 2030. The announcement came from participants at the National Defense Coordination Council Forum.

According to a charter signed by forum members, universal conscription is a central pillar of national defense; it not only enhances military readiness and deterrence but also fosters civic engagement and economic benefits.

Sociological surveys indicate that over 76% of the country’s residents support universal conscription.

The conscription system was abolished in 2008, reinstated in 2015 amid deteriorating geopolitical tensions. Initially intended as a five-year measure to build reserve forces, the policy was later extended indefinitely by parliament.
