NATO fighter jets shot down an intruding drone in southern Lithuania, preliminarily believed to have originated from Belarus
On September 14, according to the Lithuanian National Crisis Management Center, NATO fighters successfully intercepted and destroyed a drone that had entered Lithuanian airspace. The aerial threat has now been declared resolved.
Based on current preliminary evidence, the drone most likely took off from Belarus, invaded Lithuanian airspace, and was shot down near the village of Naujoji Varėna in the southern Alytus District.
During the incident, Lithuania activated a yellow air alert; residents in Kaunas County received emergency alerts. After the drone was destroyed, authorities sent text messages to the public indicating that the alert level had been downgraded to white, the threat was neutralized, and normal activities could resume.
The Lithuanian military police, local police, and other relevant departments have dispatched personnel to the incident site for handling. Viktoras Vitkuskas, head of the Crisis Management Center, personally confirmed the successful interception. At this stage, the drone’s origin and exact model remain under investigation.
