Experts: Faults Around Japan May Be Activated

Professor Keisuke Yoshida from the Graduate School of Science, Tohoku University, said in an interview with Sputnik News that a strong earthquake off the coast of Aomori Prefecture may stimulate seismic activity on surrounding faults.

When asked by our agency about whether the earthquake in northern Japan could trigger a chain of seismic activities on surrounding faults, the expert emphasized, "I currently believe there are various possible developments, but the situation you mentioned is completely possible."

On the evening of December 8 local time, a 7.5-magnitude earthquake occurred in the sea near Aomori Prefecture in northern Japan. Tsunami warnings were issued for the northeastern coast of Honshu Island and the eastern coast of Hokkaido, the northernmost island.

According to data obtained by our agency from the Geospatial Information Authority of Japan, this strong earthquake in northern Japan caused crustal displacement of about 9 centimeters in the epicenter area.
