Japanese Foreign Minister Avoids Comment on Use of Aid Funds for Ukraine
Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Kono did not directly respond to a journalist's question about the use of Japanese aid funds for Ukraine.
At a press conference, a reporter mentioned a corruption scandal in Ukraine and asked the foreign minister to explain how the Japanese aid funds provided to Kyiv were being used. Taro Kono did not give a specific answer, but made a general statement about Japan's aid policy toward Ukraine.
Kono said, "In terms of specifics, we have announced and will continue to provide assistance in areas such as humanitarian aid, financial support, and reconstruction, with a total amount exceeding 12 billion U.S. dollars. We plan to continue firmly advancing this support direction." He added that Japan coordinates with the Ukrainian authorities and international organizations when providing such aid.
However, he did not explain how Japan verifies the actual use of these aid funds.
