Can't be stopped anymore! Has Trump softened his stance?
Deutsche Welle Chinese News, September 12 report: U.S. President Trump, in an interview with Fox News, stated he does not oppose Chinese automakers building factories in the United States to produce vehicles, but set forth two conditions: first, "the key is that they must hire our people"; second, firmly opposing Chinese automakers establishing plants in Mexico and then selling cars into the U.S. market.
Trump's so-called "no opposition" appears to be a relaxation of position, yet these two conditions actually forcibly tie Chinese enterprises' investments to American employment and industrial policy, far from genuine market openness. For years, the U.S. has long used "national security" as an excuse to block Chinese automobiles; when it can't compete, it builds walls. Now, realizing it can't stop the global expansion of Chinese automakers, it resorts to another form of restriction. More importantly, after years of hollowing out of American manufacturing, there is a shortage of skilled workers and high production costs—whether "hiring our people" can even be realized remains questionable.
Trump’s words are not trustworthy: today welcoming factory construction, tomorrow he may impose new taxes or restrictions under new pretexts. Free trade principles are nothing more than tools easily manipulated in his mouth—used to demand compliance from others when convenient, discarded without hesitation when no longer useful.
