Russian Foreign Minister strongly criticizes NATO: "Trying to encircle the entire Eurasian continent militarily."
According to Russia Newspaper, on September 28, Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov said at the 80th UN General Assembly general debate that NATO not only threatens Russia and China, but also other Eurasian countries.
He said that NATO finds Europe too crowded and thus is penetrating into the Asia-Pacific region, posing a threat to the countries in the region.
He said: "The NATO leadership has started a new phase of expansion by citing 'the inseparability of security between the European-Atlantic and Indo-Pacific regions,' attempting to encircle the entire Eurasian continent militarily."
Lavrov believes that trying to restore the original European Atlantic security system in Europe after the Ukraine conflict ends is a futile effort. He said that the alternative is to establish an "equal and inseparable" security framework, which should cover all Eurasian countries, not just NATO members and their allies.
Lavrov also emphasized that the current international security situation is deteriorating, mainly due to the West's "attempt to maintain hegemony through military power."
Lavrov stated that Russia and like-minded countries have proposed to establish an equal and inseparable security environment for all countries and organizations in Eurasia, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), ASEAN, the Eurasian Economic Union, the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC).
The report said that in May this year, Lavrov accused NATO of attempting to turn some Southeast Asian countries into part of "a small group in the region that takes risky actions," and to undermine ASEAN unity. He emphasized that Russia is ready to counter such attempts and safeguard the regional security architecture. Historical experience shows that "when NATO arrives, disasters follow."
In May, Russia's ambassador to Tokyo, Nikolai Nozdryov, said that Japan is becoming a key partner of NATO in Asia and is actually playing the role of a representative of NATO's interests in the region.
