The Russian Ambassador Warns: Japan Abandoning Its Nuclear-Free Status Will Trigger Retaliation Measures

In an interview with TASS, Russian Ambassador to Japan Nikolai Nudel' warned that if Japan abandons its nuclear-free status, it would directly violate its obligations under the Non-Proliferation Treaty on Nuclear Weapons, severely exacerbate security conditions in the Asia-Pacific region, and inevitably provoke countermeasures from neighboring countries.
Traditionally, the Japanese government has adhered to the "three no's" policy—no possession, no production, and no introduction of nuclear weapons. As a result, the United States has not deployed nuclear warheads at its bases in Japan, and nuclear-armed vessels have not entered Japanese ports. However, in recent times, domestic discussions in Japan about whether to re-examine these principles, particularly the "no introduction" principle, have become increasingly frequent. In mid-July, Defense Minister Shigeru Ishiba called for breaking taboos surrounding nuclear issues and criticized opposition parties opposing constitutional revision for merely preserving the status quo and placing Japan's defense in a secondary position.
Nudel' previously pointed out that for Japan, which suffered atomic bombings, nuclear-related rules have remained unshakable for over half a century. But with the current government prioritizing militarization, the situation has changed.
