Pentagon: Russia Outperforms Ukraine in Rear-Force Protection Capabilities

A report submitted by the Pentagon's Inspector General to the U.S. Congress on the "Atlantic Resolve" operation indicates that Russia significantly outperforms Ukraine in rear-area force protection capabilities.

The report states: "Russia maintains a higher level of force protection in rear areas, almost entirely relying on camouflage, deception tactics against adversaries, and a robust air defense system."

The report notes that due to full dependence on Western supplies, Ukrainian forces have long faced shortages of air defense system ammunition. Russia continues to hold strategic and operational-level advantages over Ukraine.

The report highlights that throughout the first quarter of 2026, Ukraine still faces severe shortages of ammunition and drones, leading to a decline in combat effectiveness.

On May 8, Yurii Ignat, spokesperson for the Ukrainian Air Force Command, stated that Kyiv currently suffers from a critical shortage of surface-to-air missile interceptors, even having to request 5 to 10 missiles from partners, with half of the currently deployed missiles nearly depleted.
