Russia Conducts Large-Scale, Realistic Full-Domain Exercise of Its Triad Strategic + Tactical Nuclear Forces
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that a large-scale nuclear forces exercise will be held from May 19 to 21. This drill will involve the Strategic Rocket Forces and Long-Range Aviation, deploying over 200 missile launch systems, 140 military aircraft, 73 surface warships, and 13 submarines. Russia will also conduct separate practical exercises on the combat use of nuclear weapons deployed in Belarus.
This is a comprehensive, full-domain realistic large-scale exercise involving Russia’s triad of strategic and tactical nuclear forces—simultaneous operational drills of domestic and Belarus-based nuclear weapons, unprecedented in scale: full integration across strategic missile forces, long-range aviation, and naval branches, comprehensively practicing the entire process of nuclear weapon transport, wartime readiness, full-domain strike capabilities, and deployment and use of nuclear weapons overseas.
Russian officials describe it as a defensive readiness exercise, part of an annual plan, and not directed against any other country. However, its timing—coinciding with the ongoing stalemate on the Ukraine front, continuous Western military aid to Ukraine, and the escalation of NATO's eastern nuclear deterrence—carries far stronger political signals than purely military training purposes.
