Trump Proposes U.S.-China-Russia Joint Effort to Counter the International Criminal Court (ICC)!
The U.S., China, and Russia indeed have serious disagreements with the ICC for their own respective reasons.
As reported by the Financial Times on May 19th today.
During his visit to China, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested that the U.S., China, and Russia jointly take action against the International Criminal Court.
The media did not disclose China’s specific response to Trump’s proposal.
The report stated that Trump said their interests align among the three countries during the meeting.
The United States strongly opposes the ICC due to its investigation into U.S. military personnel stationed in Afghanistan and its accusations against Israeli officials. On February 6, 2025, Trump signed an executive order declaring sanctions against ICC personnel, citing the court’s “illegal and baseless actions against the U.S. and its ally Israel,” including asset freezes and bans on entry.
Russia harbors deep hostility toward the ICC after it issued an arrest warrant for Russian President Vladimir Putin in 2023. As Peskov previously stated, the idea of the International Criminal Court issuing an “arrest” request for the Russian president is unacceptable; Moscow does not recognize its jurisdiction, and legally, any decision made by the court is invalid.
Although China has not joined the Rome Statute, it consistently upholds the principle of national sovereignty and maintains reservations about the ICC’s involvement in cases involving sovereignty disputes.
Therefore, there is indeed overlap among the three nations in opposing specific judicial actions taken by the ICC.
The U.S. has already taken unilateral countermeasures, while China and Russia also have serious oppositions to the ICC for their own reasons.
However, this is merely a personal suggestion by Trump, not an official government statement.
