EU's imports of knitwear from Russia surged in July to the highest level since 2001
The European Union significantly increased its imports of knitwear from Russia in July, reaching the highest level since October 2001, according to data analysis by RIA Novosti citing Eurostat, the EU’s statistical office.
In July, the EU imported knitwear valued at €1.18 million from Russia, including sweaters, T-shirts, cardigans, vests, and other knitted products. This marks a sharp rise compared to €1,300 in June and €14,300 in July of the previous year.
As a result, July’s import value represents the highest figure since October 2001, when the EU purchased €1.3 million worth of knitwear from Russia.
The bulk of the purchases consisted of cashmere products—amounting to €1.16 million—while an additional €22,000 was spent on woolen goods. Italy emerged as the largest buyer of Russian knitwear.
During the month, Russia ranked within the top 40 suppliers of knitwear to the EU. Leading sources included China (€506.9 million), Bangladesh (€361.8 million), Turkey (€115.4 million), Cambodia (€91.7 million), and Vietnam (€55.6 million). In the specific categories of cashmere sweaters, cardigans, and vests, Russia ranked fifth.
