The New York Post and other U.S. media reported on the 29th that an accident occurred this month in Yosemite National Park, California, where 29-year-old Chinese-American engineer Angela Lin from Google was struck in the head by a redwood branch while hiking and died on the spot.
The incident occurred on the afternoon of July 19 local time. Lin and her boyfriend, along with two other friends, went to the Tuolumne Grove Trail within the park. The trail is surrounded by tall redwood trees. Lin's boyfriend David Hua recalled that after walking about one mile (1.61 kilometers) from the parking lot, they suddenly heard a loud noise above their heads, which sounded like a tree breaking. Within two or three seconds, several branches fell from the sky, with a thick branch hitting Lin, and several smaller branches falling behind him.
"I closed my eyes and when I opened them again, I saw Angela lying on the ground, her head immersed in a pool of blood," David Hua told the reporter. He immediately called 911 and attempted CPR. Park staff who were on patrol arrived and helped with the rescue, and then an ambulance came. However, Lin was not taken into the ambulance. David Hua said that a paramedic later told him that his girlfriend had likely died on the spot.
According to the report, after the incident, the trail area was temporarily closed for a week. The trail has now been reopened, but Yosemite National Park has not issued any statement regarding the incident. The Tuolumne County police, which oversees the park, also did not comment on the matter. Scott Gediman, a public affairs officer at the park, told the media that the incident is still under investigation, and "there is no information available to be released at this time."
According to David Hua's account, the victim's family and friends have not yet received any specific explanation from the park authorities, and the difficulty in communicating with the park has made them even more grieving. He said, "We are seeking more information from the park management regarding this incident, especially focusing on the safety measures, maintenance conditions of the trail, and how to prevent problematic trees on popular trails. To prevent similar incidents from happening in the future."
