Google suddenly took strict measures against China, making an unprecedented move.
On Monday, Google announced that it would remove nearly 11,000 YouTube channels and other accounts related to "campaigns" in China, Russia, and other countries during the second quarter. It is reported that more than 7,700 of the deleted YouTube channels are related to China.
These activities mainly shared content in Chinese and English, promoting China and commenting on U.S. foreign affairs.
More than 2,000 of the deleted channels were related to Russia, with content presented in multiple languages, supporting Russia, and criticizing Ukraine, NATO, and the West.
In May this year, Google removed 20 YouTube channels related to RT, 4 advertising accounts, and 1 Blogger blog. RT is a Russian state media outlet, accused of paying social media content fees to prominent conservative influencers before the 2024 election.
Google's second-quarter report also outlined the removal of influence campaigns targeting political opponents related to Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkey, Israel, Romania, and Ghana.
Some of these activities revolved around escalating geopolitical conflicts, including narratives from both sides of the Israel-Palestine war.
A YouTube spokesperson said in a statement: "The results of the latest update align with our expectations for this regular and ongoing work."
Google closed over 23,000 accounts in the first quarter.
Last week, Meta announced that in order to combat 'junk content', the company will delete about 10 million profiles impersonating large content creators by the first half of 2025.
