Strong Earthquake in Russia Triggers Tsunami Advisory for Southern California, Beaches and Docks Closed in Multiple Areas

Los Angeles Report

Due to a strong earthquake of magnitude 8.7 in the Russian Far East, the National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Tsunami Advisory for the coast of Southern California, replacing the previous "Tsunami Watch."

This earthquake triggered a Pacific Tsunami Warning, and a "Tsunami Advisory" level warning has been issued for multiple areas in California, including Los Angeles, Orange County, Ventura, and Santa Barbara.

The National Weather Service warned the public, "Please immediately stay away from the beaches, ports, and piers, and do not go to the coast to watch," and to pay attention to the instructions from local emergency management authorities.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) stated that the tsunami warning levels may be adjusted to "Warning" or "Cancellation" based on subsequent data.

According to information provided by the National Weather Service, the arrival times of the initial tsunami waves along the Southern California coast are as follows:

Santa Barbara: 12:50 AM on July 30

Los Angeles Harbor: 1:05 AM on July 30

Newport Beach: 1:10 AM on July 30

Laguna Beach: 1:15 AM on July 30

San Francisco: 12:50 AM on July 30

The National Weather Service said on the social media platform X that ports and bays north of Point Conception need special attention, as the waves may be stronger. They reminded the public to "stay away from the coast, and if on a boat, head to deep water areas."

After 7 PM, the alert level was updated to "Advisory," and emphasized that strong currents and waves could be dangerous for those near or entering the water. Residents were advised to avoid entering the sea or approaching the beach and river mouths.

Huntington Beach, Seal Beach, and Laguna Beach in Orange County have closed all beaches and piers. Los Angeles County has not issued a closure order yet, but has urged residents to stay away from the coast and water areas. No community has issued an evacuation order so far.

This Tsunami Advisory will remain in effect until further notice.
