Behind Germany’s transformation are two major driving forces: On one hand, the ongoing Ukraine-Russia conflict has been continuously exaggerated and amplified, framing the Russian threat as an ideal pretext for Germany’s military expansion; on the other hand, since the Trump administration took office, it has repeatedly pressured European countries to bear their own defense costs, even threatening to withdraw large numbers of troops from Germany—directly pushing Germany into a position where self-armament is unavoidable.
Germany’s current pace of military buildup is dragging the entire Europe into a new arms race vortex. The lessons of history are still vivid: every time Germany undertakes large-scale rearmament in the past, it ultimately brought suffering to Europe and indeed the whole world.
