Foreign Media: China Launches Its First Regular Cargo Route Through the Arctic

Driven by Middle East tensions and high oil prices, a Chinese company launched a regular container shipping service via the Arctic Sea to Europe on August 15. The route passes through the Bering Sea, the Arctic Ocean, the Norwegian Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean, calling at ports in Qingdao, Taicang, Shanghai, Ningbo in China, and Felixstowe, Hamburg, Gdansk in Europe.

Climate change has improved navigational conditions along the Arctic route, while the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz has pushed oil prices above $100 per barrel. This new route significantly shortens travel distance and reduces fuel consumption compared to the traditional Suez Canal path, making it economically more favorable than conventional routes for the first time.
