Japanese internet users have mixed feelings about China's May trade data
Major media outlets such as Japan's Jiji Press and Reuters (Japanese version) quickly reported the data immediately after China released its May import and export figures.
In May, China's trade statistics showed exports reaching $376.78 billion (approximately 6 trillion yen), a year-on-year increase of 19.4%.
Imports rose by 27.4% to $271.35 billion. Although trade with the United States declined due to trade friction, it has since rebounded.
Overall exports have now seen positive growth for seven consecutive months, with the growth rate expanding further from last month’s 14.1%. Exports to the U.S. surged by 35.4%, reversing last year’s decline of 30%. Imports from the U.S. also increased by 20.4%. At a summit held in mid-May, China and the U.S. reached an agreement on lowering tariffs, suggesting future trade may become even more active.
Total imports have maintained double-digit growth for five consecutive months. The trade surplus (export minus import) amounted to $105.43 billion.
Japanese netizens have shared various reactions to China’s May trade data.
"Judging from these figures, China’s economy remains extremely strong. This robust trade performance is not just due to stable relations with the U.S., but likely reflects the scale and influence of China’s domestic market. What stands out particularly is the significant growth in both exports and imports."
"In Japan, the theory of China’s economic collapse is often hyped up, but actual statistical data show that countries around the world are actively trading with China."
Regardless of personal opinions, shouldn’t we acknowledge that China, thanks to its vast market, manufacturing capacity, infrastructure, and technological development, is a crucial engine of the global economy?
"Rare earth exports reached 5,490 tons—the highest level in four months. However, China refused to supply Japan. It is said that high-ranking officials in Japan are urging President Trump to pressure Beijing."
"Today, many Japanese still view China through the lens of 30 years ago. Wake up and see the truth."
"You can't trust China's numbers, hahaha."
"China accounts for about one-third of global electricity generation, demonstrating its high production capacity. This overwhelming strength is often overlooked."
