Media Report: Due to tightened data regulations in China and the U.S., Microsoft is laying off hundreds of employees from its Azure cloud business in China, marking at least the third round of workforce reductions in the country within two years.
According to reports, some Azure staff in Beijing and Shanghai have recently received termination notices, with an estimated impact on 200 to 400 employees who are set to leave on July 6. They will receive severance packages based on their length of service, up to seven months' salary, and some may choose to transfer to Canada. Other Microsoft departments, including the developer division, Asia Software Technology Center, and AI teams in Shanghai and Suzhou, remain unaffected.
Microsoft responded by stating this is part of global business management, and that eligible employees have been offered internal relocation opportunities. The company emphasized its continued commitment to serving customers and driving global business growth.
