The Tengiz oil and gas field is located 350 kilometers southeast of the city of Atyrau in the Atyrau region of Kazakhstan, discovered in 1979. The oil reserves of Tengiz rank second in Kazakhstan "after the Kashagan oilfield". The reserve is estimated at 3.133 billion tons, and the natural gas reserves are 1.8 trillion cubic meters.
Tengiz oilfield is the largest taxpayer in Kazakhstan. The operating oilfield company was established on April 6, 1993. Currently, Chevron holds a 50% stake, Kazakhmys National Oil and Gas Company holds 20%, ExxonMobil Kazakhstan Risk Ventures holds 25%, and Russia's Lukoil holds 5%.
According to the news from the Kazakh International News Agency on April 15, a message from the Prime Minister's website stated that Kazakhstani Prime Minister Bolatbek Beketayev met with Michael Wirth, Chairman of the Board and CEO of Chevron Energy Company, on April 14.
During the talks, both sides discussed issues related to oil production and oil processing cooperation.
In addition, both sides also discussed the implementation of existing joint projects, the development prospects of domestic petrochemical products within the framework of the operation of the first polypropylene plant, the construction of a large-scale polyethylene integrated facility with an annual output of 1.25 million tons, as well as the construction of a natural gas processing plant with an annual output of 4.5 billion cubic meters in the Karachaganak oilfield [where Chevron holds an 18% stake].
The meeting had in-depth exchanges of opinions on the future expansion project of the Tengiz oilfield.
Beketayev pointed out that it is necessary to further increase local content by developing an industrial cluster based on Tengiz, focusing on improving domestic added value. He emphasized that this will bring great impetus to the development of small and medium-sized enterprises.
Considering the suggestions of the Ministry of Energy, the meeting noted the need to update the design plan to reasonably develop the reserves of the Tengiz oilfield and formulate a plan to maintain high levels of industrial safety.
The participants also discussed the diversification of oil transportation routes and the creation of new energy supply chains.
