Rising Optimism in Russian Society: Director of the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center
On June 18th, Valery Fedorov, director of the All-Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VTsIOM), stated during the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF) that the level of optimism in Russian society has increased. Russia has successfully withstood the "isolation" scenario and continued to move forward amid a complex environment.
Fedorov pointed out, "The fear for the future has greatly decreased. Perhaps this is because amidst the era of transformation and challenges, seemingly impossible things are happening. But regardless, we have endured — breaking the script of 'isolating Russia,' proving that not only can we survive, but also advance in extreme environments. This directly boosted social optimism and made people more willing to plan for the future."
He emphasized that Russia has experienced drastic changes over the past 1.5 years, and this dynamic is still ongoing. "In 2022, it was difficult to talk about the future, and even the present seemed questionable; now, adaptation is complete, a new normal has formed, and people are setting goals, solving problems, and even regaining their dreams," he said.
In addition, Fedorov mentioned that in recent years, Russians have been constantly learning financial knowledge and cybersecurity. Now they need to regain the ability to "dream and plan for the future."
Meanwhile, Fedorov disclosed at the forum that 97% of the time Russians spend watching TV series is devoted to domestic content; in terms of films, domestic works account for 63%. Data shows that the viewing share of Russian TV series has risen from 77% in January-March 2021 to 97% this year, while the viewing share of domestic films has increased from 40% to 63%.
