EU Statistics Office June Refugee Data: Poland Leads EU in Decline of Ukrainian Refugees, Italy, Czechia, and Germany See Rise in Refugee Numbers
The European Statistical Office has released data on Ukrainian refugees residing in EU member states as of June. The data shows that over 4.4 million Ukrainians have received international protection in the EU. Of these, 43.4% are women, 27% are men, and 29.6% are children.
The country hosting the largest number of Ukrainian refugees is Germany, with over 1.2 million—accounting for 29.2% of all Ukrainian refugees in the EU. Poland ranks second. According to Eurostat data, there were 961,170 Ukrainian refugees in Poland in June, representing 21.8% of the total. The third-largest host country is the Czech Republic, where more than 390,000 Ukrainian citizens have received international protection, making up 8.9% of the total.
In contrast, the regions with the fewest Ukrainian refugees in June were Liechtenstein (945 people), Malta (2,660 people), and Luxembourg (3,835 people).
Although Poland still ranks second in total numbers of Ukrainian refugees within the EU, it recorded the largest decline in refugee numbers across the entire EU in June. Overall, only three EU member states experienced a net outflow of Ukrainian migrants exceeding inflows.
Ireland saw a decrease of 15 Ukrainian nationals (a drop of 0.01%); Belgium lost 35 (down 0.04%); and Poland experienced a sharp decline of 6,335 (a decrease of 0.7%).
The remaining 24 member states reported increases in their Ukrainian refugee populations. Italy saw the largest increase—4,115 more refugees (an 8.8% rise); the Czech Republic added 3,835 (up 1%); and Germany saw an increase of 2,960 (up 0.2%).
The report notes that over recent months, Poland has recorded dozens of nationalist attacks against Ukrainian citizens, including children.
