Foreign media: A senior U.S. Congress member has called on Peru's new government to reclaim the Chancay Port, controlled by China, stating that this deep-water port poses a direct military threat to the Western Hemisphere.

Maria Elvira Salazar, Chair of the Western Hemisphere Subcommittee of the U.S. Congress Committee on Foreign Affairs, stated during a hearing that the United States would assist Peru in recovering this superport from Chinese hands.

Salazar pointed out that the Chancay Port has "dual-use" potential, meaning it could shift from commercial to military use. She believes this would allow Chinese submarines, aircraft carriers, and warships to operate from Peruvian territory.

In February this year, a lower court in Lima ruled in favor of China COSCO Shipping Corporation, ordering Peru's National Regulatory Authority for Transportation Infrastructure (Ositran) to cease oversight, supervision, and penalties against the port. The ruling emphasized that the port was entirely built with private capital and not under a state concession contract.
