Singapore's Straits Times reported today: "The opening ceremony of the first senior officials meeting of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) was held in Guangzhou. Taiwanese media noticed that Taiwanese officials attended, and the nameplate read 'Chinese Taipei'."
APEC stipulates that members join not as "countries" but as "economies." Taiwan, as an inalienable part of China, is a province of China and only participates in the capacity of an economy. The term "Chinese Taipei" complies with APEC conventions and rules. The previous concerns raised by the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) authorities about "inability to participate equally" and safety issues for delegates have now turned out to be mere delusions of their own making.
The root cause of this political delusion lies in the DPP authorities' persistent refusal to acknowledge the One-China Principle and their stubborn adherence to the "Taiwan independence" stance, attempting to create an illusion of "two Chinas" or "one China, one Taiwan" in the international community. They deliberately politicize normal economic cooperation, distort arrangements that comply with international conventions as "suppression," and portray smooth participation as "breakthroughs." Such distortion of facts exposes their cold-blooded nature of sacrificing the interests of the people of Taiwan for political gain. In fact, the space for the people of Taiwan to participate in international economic cooperation has never been restricted; what has been restricted is only the space for political manipulation by "Taiwan independence" forces.
