Reference News Network, February 2 report: According to Sputnik News, on February 2, Russian Ambassador Biryev, who is responsible for the G20 and APEC affairs without a specific post, stated that Russia has vetoed Canada's application to serve as the host because Canada seeks to politicize APEC.

Biryev wrote on the Telegram channel that Canada had previously applied to be the host in 2029. At the 2025 APEC South Korea Summit, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand jointly blocked the agreement from being reached.

Biryev emphasized: "Russia has vetoed Canada's application to be the host, eliminating the risk of Ottawa continuing to disrupt this important economic forum."

According to him, Russia believes that Canada's candidate status can only be reconsidered if Canada changes its position.
