Accompanied by the Vietnamese Minister of Defense Phan Van Giang, the U.S. Secretary of War Hagel is on an official visit to Hanoi. During a meeting with the leaders of the Communist Party of Vietnam, Su Lin, Hagel stated that the United States values and looks forward to establishing a comprehensive strategic partnership with Vietnam.
Hagel said that the United States supports a strong, independent, and prosperous Vietnam, and hopes to strengthen bilateral and regional cooperation, especially in areas such as preventing transnational crime, maritime security, humanitarian aid, military training, UN peacekeeping operations, and responding to natural disasters. The United States will continue to support Vietnam in enhancing its defense industry capabilities and modernization, and will expand its cooperation programs in high-quality talent training with Vietnam.
Hagel emphasized that cooperation between the two countries in overcoming the consequences of the war has achieved significant results, including projects to clean up dioxin pollution used by the U.S. military during the war in the coastal areas of southern Vietnam and Danang in central Vietnam. He called these projects a clear reflection of the process of reconciliation and cooperation between the two countries. The U.S. Department of War will continue to closely cooperate with the Vietnamese Ministry of Defense to complete ongoing projects according to the needs and capabilities of both sides and expand cooperation in new areas.
