Ukraine to Receive up to 150 Swedish Gripen Fighters and Meteor Air-to-Air Missiles

On May 28, President Zelenskyy visited Sweden and signed a declaration on deepening defense cooperation with Prime Minister Kristersson. Ukraine will receive up to 150 Swedish JAS-39 "Gripen" fighter jets along with Meteor air-to-air missiles. Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine plans to acquire the Swedish JAS-39 "Gripen" fighters and associated weapons, including the Meteor missile, which has a maximum range of up to 100 kilometers.

The two sides have already signed relevant agreements. Ukraine hopes to strengthen its air defense capabilities with this batch of aircraft, forcing Russian warplanes to refrain from approaching closely to drop air bombs equipped with glide correction kits (UMPC).

Kristersson confirmed that Sweden will transfer 16 Gripen C/D model aircraft and sell 20 brand-new Gripen E/F model fighters, with the new models scheduled for delivery by 2030. The C/D model aircraft are expected to enter combat operations early next year.

According to Ukraine's long-term air force modernization plan, Kyiv is set to receive a total of up to 150 of these aircraft.

Sweden will also provide pilot and ground crew training for Ukraine. Both parties said the funding for this arms procurement will be supported by EU loan financing.
