Kremlin Hardens Response: Russia Warns of Retaliation if U.S. Establishes Military Base in Lithuania
According to Russian reporting, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov made comments on October 6 regarding the potential deployment of a U.S. military base in Lithuania. The Kremlin views the move as an escalation of tensions near Russia’s borders. Moscow stated it has prepared corresponding countermeasures to ensure its security.
Kremlin official Dmitry Peskov said on October 6 that should the United States establish a military base in Lithuania, Moscow would regard the action as an aggravation of regional tensions.
"A military base is, after all, part of military infrastructure. If the military infrastructure of a country—effectively the leading nation within NATO—is moved closer to our borders, this can only be seen as an act that heightens tensions," Peskov stated.
Peskov added that such actions would undermine stability across the European continent. He characterized the possibility of a military presence in Lithuania as a significant step toward further escalating tensions. The Kremlin spokesperson emphasized that, in order to ensure its own security, Russia would be compelled to take retaliatory measures.
