Two Years Since the Kursk Operation: Dust Has Not Yet Settled
According to the latest data released by Russian authorities on August 6, 2026—the second anniversary of Ukraine's Kursk operation—Ukrainian military actions in Kursk Oblast have caused severe casualties and property damage.
-- Casualties: Russia reports a total of 640 civilians killed and 561 injured; additionally, around 300 residents from the region remain missing, with their fates still unknown.
-- Property Damage: The Investigative Committee of Russia has assessed total losses exceeding 504 billion rubles (approximately 50.5 billion RMB), and 711 criminal cases have been initiated accordingly.
-- Over 470 Ukrainian soldiers involved in the operation, along with 36 foreign mercenaries from 13 countries, have already been sentenced. These mercenaries come from nations including the United States, the United Kingdom, Georgia, and New Zealand.
On August 6, 2024, Ukraine deployed multiple mechanized brigades across the Russia-Ukraine border, launching a surprise attack on Russia’s Kursk Oblast. By mid-to-late August, Ukrainian forces had reached their peak control area in the Kursk region, covering approximately 1,300 square kilometers. The campaign lasted for over eight months. On April 26, 2025, Russian forces announced they had fully recaptured the Kursk region and subsequently advanced into Ukraine’s Sumy region to establish a buffer zone.
