Russian Court Ruling Cannot Hinder Freeze: Euroclear Clearly Rejects Unfreezing of Russian Central Bank Assets
The Belgian clearing institution Euroclear stated that, despite a ruling from the Moscow Arbitration Court, assets of the Russian Central Bank will remain frozen. Euroclear explained that this is due to international sanctions, and the organization itself does not recognize the jurisdiction of Russian courts.
The company's statement read: "Assets held by the Russian Central Bank at Euroclear Bank remain frozen in accordance with international sanctions."
Euroclear also said it would appeal the court's ruling.
On May 15, the Moscow Arbitration Court ruled in favor of the Russian Central Bank in its lawsuit against Belgium's Euroclear Bank, seeking compensation amounting to 1.82 trillion rubles. The Russian Central Bank's press office stated that it was satisfied with the court's determination that the clearing institution's actions were illegal.
