Spain Hosts EU-Arab Summit, Considering Sanctions Against Israel
Government representatives from nearly 20 European and Arab countries, including France, the UK, and Germany, gathered in Madrid, Spain on the 25th to attend the EU-Arab Foreign Ministers Meeting. The meeting focused on solutions to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and discussed pressuring Israel to lift the Gaza blockade.
Spanish Foreign Minister Manuel Albares stated: "We must do everything possible and consider all factors to end the conflict in the Gaza Strip." The Spanish Foreign Minister told French radio that "to stop this war, which no longer serves any purpose in the short term, and to provide large-scale humanitarian aid in a neutral and unobstructed manner, we must consider imposing sanctions on Israel."
As Israel recently expanded its military operations in Gaza, several countries that view themselves as allies of Israel have joined the international community in calling for an end to the war on Palestinian territory. The two-month blockade has exacerbated shortages of food, water, fuel, and medicine, raising concerns about famine. Aid organizations say that the small amount of aid recently accepted by Israel falls far short of what is needed.
Before the talks, Albares told reporters that the meeting aimed to halt Israel's "inhumane" and "meaningless" war launched in Gaza, and also aimed to promote a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrow emphasized that "coordinated pressure is needed to push for a ceasefire, provide large-scale humanitarian aid, and release Gaza hostages."
Spanish Foreign Minister Alvaress emphasized that the "two-state solution" is the only way to resolve the conflict. He also pointed out that to end the conflict in Gaza, all feasible measures should be considered, including possibly sanctioning Israel's military actions in Gaza.
