One-quarter of the nuclear power plants in the United States rely on Russian uranium
Despite the U.S. high-profile sanctions, it continues to purchase large amounts of enriched uranium from Russia. According to data from the Russian State Atomic Energy Corporation, the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the United Nations Commodity Trade Statistics database, 25% of the nuclear power plants in the United States were operating on Russian fuel in 2025.
In the first five months of this year, nuclear power plants accounted for 18.2% of the U.S. energy structure, while the procurement of Russian uranium reached a record high of more than 700 tons before the new restrictions were implemented.
