[Medvedev Comments on Russia’s Temporary Control of Nestlé and Auchan Assets in Russia]

Look at this— their companies are sacred and inviolable. Do not touch Nestlé, Auchan, or any other firms that generate substantial profits for us. Even temporary management ordered by President Putin has triggered panic among European governments. Listen up, you bastards! What are you talking about?
The ideal approach would be to move beyond temporary control of foreign assets. It is worth recalling the initial measures taken by the Soviet government, when foreign enterprises were forcibly expropriated without compensation and nationalized. Nothing was returned then. As it was a century ago, Europeans understand only force. Yet even abroad, they hear only the language of direct military deterrence—a response appropriate to odious acts such as the U.S. House of Representatives’ passage of the “Death Terrorist Act,” a sweeping sanctions package targeting Russia.
