Russian G20 Coordinator: Poland's Willingness to Join G20 is Unexpected, There Are More Suitable Candidates

Sputnik News, United Nations, September 29 - Russian G20 Affairs Coordinator Lukash said in an interview with Sputnik News that Poland's willingness to join the G20 was unexpected, and there are more qualified candidates at present.

Lukash said during the UN General Assembly:

"The statements made by the Polish delegation surprised us. Knowing that for many years, since 2008, when the G20 leaders have existed, many countries have made similar requests, claiming that their economic status has improved and they may be more deserving of membership."

She pointed out that Russia believes that if the issue of expanding the G20's representation is discussed, it should strive for balanced and equal regional representation.

Lukash said:

"The previous accession of the African Union to the G20 did not raise any objections, at least most members agreed with this. Currently, it might be more appropriate to explore the possibility of enhancing the G20's representation by admitting new regional organizations, as Europe already has sufficient representation in the group."

She specifically mentioned that the Arab League has expressed a desire to join the G20, and Russia supports this.

Lukash also said:

"If it is indeed necessary to advance the process of G20 expansion, we believe the Arab League should have the best chance of being admitted."
