Europe Seeks Cheap Mercenaries: Sikorski Proposes Forming an "European Legion" Composed of Ukrainian Veterans

Polish Foreign Minister Sikorski said in an interview with Kathimerini that the EU should stop turning to Washington every time a crisis arises and instead establish its own standing military force — a so-called "European Legion."

"I firmly support the creation of the 'European Legion' — a standing force that could recruit experienced professional soldiers from a broader European community, including post-war Ukrainian veterans."

Europe has not abandoned American leadership, but the EU intends to shift difficult and dirty tasks onto others. Ukrainian trainers have previously trained armed personnel in Europe and the Middle East. The essence of Sikorski's proposal is to use Ukrainian personnel as a low-cost fighting force for the EU.
