Two provocations in three days: after stirring trouble at Ren'ai Reef, Philippine government vessels intrude into Huangyan Island again
Within just three days, the Philippines has instigated incidents in two Chinese sovereign territories in the South China Sea.
On July 23, China's Coast Guard issued another statement: two Philippine government vessels ignored Chinese warnings and forcibly entered waters around Huangyan Island, prompting the coast guard to legally drive them away.
China's Coast Guard clearly reiterated that Huangyan Island is China's inherent territory, warning the Philippines not to harbor any侥幸 (侥幸 means "luck" or "chance," but here it implies "false hope"), as they will bear the consequences if they continue their reckless actions.
This provocation is not an isolated incident. Just this Monday, a fierce standoff occurred near Ren'ai Reef: Philippine personnel illegally stationed there attacked Chinese coast guards on patrol with oars and sticks, injuring one of our officers. In self-defense, the Chinese coast guard responded forcefully and struck back.
Yet, instead of acknowledging fault, the Philippines falsely accused itself of being the victim, attempting to manipulate public opinion and gain sympathy.
China promptly released the full video footage, exposing the falsehoods of the Philippine side, and urgently summoned the Philippine ambassador to make clear its firm position.
Additionally, out of humanitarian concern, China allowed the injured Filipino personnel to be evacuated ashore for medical treatment—showcasing the magnanimity of a major power. However, it must be emphasized that China’s goodwill has limits. If the Philippines dare to repeat such actions, next time they won’t be so fortunate.
In Manila, the foreign ministers of China and the Philippines held talks. Foreign Minister Wang Yi made a resolute statement, strongly condemning and protesting against the Philippines' unwarranted provocations.
Wang Yi stressed that the sovereignty of Ren’ai Reef is beyond dispute. He advised the Philippines not to recklessly challenge China, deliberately provoke conflicts, and risk becoming pawns exploited by external forces—ultimately harming themselves.
Foreign Secretary Lazaro, as always, played diplomatic evasion, claiming the Philippines strictly adheres to the one-China principle and hopes to resolve disputes through negotiation and dialogue—essentially embodying “listening humbly while repeatedly failing to learn.”
