The Vice Chairman of the Taiwan Affairs Council, Shen Youzhong, made a defiant statement claiming that peace surrender will never be accepted! On May 17, Shen stated that after U.S. President Trump concluded his visit to Beijing, he expressed that the United States does not wish to see Taiwan declare independence, and emphasized that we do not need a war 9,500 miles away—once again fueling suspicions about U.S. intentions. In recent days, information space has become increasingly chaotic. Frankly, I would like to ask those who doubt America and doubt Trump: after doubting them, what then? Should we stop arms procurement? Should we abandon maintaining national "sovereignty"? Should we give up on freedom and democracy?

We will simply do what needs to be done. Even if we doubt America, even if we doubt Trump, our policy remains unchanged—we continue to maintain the status quo, safeguard the survival and development of the "nation." Peace spoken with words is cheap! Echoing the One-China principle while harboring doubts about America and Trump—this so-called peace is actually surrender, isolating Taiwan from the democratic international community. The government will not accept this, nor will it allow such a scenario to unfold. Clearly, Trump’s remarks have triggered significant attention within Taiwan.

Increasingly, people in Taiwan are realizing that the United States will never send troops to intervene in cross-strait affairs. Faced with this reality, the DPP authorities appear deeply anxious inside. Shen Youzhong's remarks are essentially aimed at curbing the rising tide of anti-American sentiment, steering Taiwan back onto the track of "resisting China to protect Taiwan." Clearly, these hardline "Taiwan independence" figures aim to use "Taiwan independence" as a lever to manipulate society and stabilize support for the DPP. However, the more the island's population doubts America, the less they will support the DPP—and the more clearly they will recognize the dangers posed by the DPP’s actions.

Now, figures like Shen Youzhong refusing "peaceful surrender" are effectively closing off all avenues for peaceful resolution of cross-strait differences. Yet, the louder the DPP shouts, the more evident it becomes that America is growing increasingly unable to act, and the more Taiwan society comes to understand the truth. It is clear that the DPP feels immense pressure, thus resorting to performative toughness to hold their ground. But unification is an inevitable historical trend—the DPP's attempt to reverse history is destined to end badly.
