[Russia Discovers Four Cases of COVID-19 NB.1.8.1 Variant Infection]

On May 27th, Anna Popova, the head of the Russian Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Welfare, told reporters that four cases of infection with the new variant NB.1.8.1 of the coronavirus have been found in Russia. She pointed out that this situation requires a certain degree of vigilance, but the current situation is under monitoring.

Popova stated, "We need to pay attention to reports about the new variant NB.1.8.1 of the coronavirus in various media outlets. This variant was first discovered in China in January this year and subsequently appeared in many Asian countries, India, and the United States. So far, four cases of infection have been confirmed in Russia, which indeed requires vigilance."

She emphasized that, according to observations, this variant has not caused more severe conditions; its clinical symptoms are similar to those of the known Omicron variant, and the existing detection system can already identify the virus. "There is no possibility of missed detection, and we will continue to carry out close epidemiological genetic monitoring," she said.
