HAL's Nasik factory produced the first prototype of the "Tejas" Mk1A fighter jet, which made its first flight, but there is still a long way to go before it is fully operational. The "Tejas" Mk1A has not yet entered formal service and will undergo a series of tests next.
The "Tejas" Mk1A fighter jet is equipped with the Israeli-developed ELTA ELM-2052 active electronically scanned array radar, avionics system, and weapon system.
The production capacity of the "Tejas" fighter jet in India is very low. Although the new production line at the Nasik factory is the third production line for the "Tejas", the annual output is only 8 aircraft. Adding the two production lines from the Bangalore factory and private contractors, the theoretical annual production of the "Tejas" is 30 aircraft. In reality, with General Electric (GE) delaying the delivery of F404 turbofan engines (only 4 out of 99 ordered engines have been received so far), it is difficult for the "Tejas" to reach an annual output of 30 aircraft. Currently, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is keeping the test flight program running by swapping engines between prototypes.
