Three Dead in Tank Ammunition Explosion During U.S.-Japan Exercise in Japan
According to Japanese media outlet "Ōita Broadcasting" reporting on April 21: This morning, an explosion occurred at a tank during a military exercise at the Jisatsu Training Ground of the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force in Ōita Prefecture, with four individuals rushed to hospital for emergency treatment.
The training site is currently hosting a joint U.S.-Japan exercise involving live-fire launches of anti-tank missiles known as "Javelin."
According to the Ōta-Kuma Regional Fire Headquarters, around 8:40 a.m. Japan time on the 21st, fire departments received reports stating that "a tank exploded at the Jisatsu Training Ground in Ōita Prefecture, resulting in multiple injuries."
In this incident, four people were taken to hospitals, three of whom suffered cardiac and respiratory arrest. Another woman sustained serious injuries and was transported by emergency helicopter to a hospital for critical care.
Latest reports confirm that three individuals have died, while one remains in deep coma.
Self-Defense Force personnel conducting training at the Jisatsu Training Ground are stationed in Kuma. According to Ōita Prefectural Government officials, the Kyushu Defense Bureau contacted them saying, "An accident occurred during tank firing training."
The Self-Defense Force is currently investigating the details of the incident.
