Japanese Media: China's Seawater Desalination Daily Processing Capacity Exceeds 3 Million Tons

According to a report by Japanese media outlet Kyodo News NNA on June 9: By the end of 2025, China’s seawater desalination capacity (daily processing capacity) will reach 3,076,805 tons. This is an increase of 221,283 tons compared to last year and a rise of 86.4% compared to two decades ago.

There are currently 167 seawater desalination plants nationwide, including 68 plants with capacities exceeding 10,000 tons per day, 50 plants ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 tons per day, and 49 plants with capacities below 1,000 tons per day.

Seawater desalination plants are located across 10 provinces, autonomous regions, and municipalities, namely Liaoning, Tianjin, Hebei, Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Fujian, Guangdong, Guangxi, and Hainan.

The highest daily processing capacity is in Shandong Province at 964,239 tons per day, followed by Zhejiang Province at 823,906 tons per day, Hebei Province at 490,700 tons per day, Tianjin Municipality at 456,000 tons per day, and Liaoning Province at 161,984 tons per day.

After desalination, the water is primarily used for industrial production, supporting coastal manufacturing industries such as petrochemicals, steel, and power generation. Some of it is also used for domestic drinking water.
