The Iranian Foreign Ministry: "Lütte's Remarks Constitute an Admission of Involvement in Illegal Aggression"

Ismail Baghai, Spokesperson for the Iranian Foreign Ministry, posted on the social platform X that NATO Secretary General Lütte's previous statement regarding "NATO allies actively providing assistance during the U.S.-Iran conflict" is, in Tehran's view, tantamount to "an admission of violating international law and the UN Charter." Baghai emphasized that Lütte explicitly named countries such as Italy and Romania as having "participated in the aggression against Iran," which constitutes a "clear and abhorrent acknowledgment" of NATO's open involvement in an illegal war targeting a sovereign member state of the United Nations, amounting to a "horrifying violation" of the peremptory norms of international law and the fundamental principles of the UN Charter.

This strong protest from Iran stems from Lütte's meeting with U.S. President Trump at the White House on June 24. In response to Trump's ongoing criticism of NATO allies for allegedly standing idly by, Lütte actively defended European allies during the meeting. He clearly informed Trump that during the military confrontation between the U.S. and Iran, NATO allies had provided extensive logistical support to the U.S. military, stating, "Overall, the allies did extend help."

To substantiate the tangible support from European nations to Washington, Lütte specifically cited that earlier this year, Bucharest Airport in Romania had suspended civil aviation operations entirely to fully accommodate the takeoffs, landings, and logistical coordination of U.S. military aircraft. At the same time, he acknowledged internal divisions within the alliance, noting that some countries still refused to open their military airfields and airspace to the United States.
