Japan to discharge 7,800 tons of radioactive tritium-contaminated wastewater this year, with a total plan of 62,400 tons

According to Kyodo News on July 6: On the 6th, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO) began discharging contaminated wastewater containing radioactive tritium accumulated at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean.

This marks the third release into the ocean during the current fiscal year. Approximately 7,800 tons of accumulated radioactive wastewater will be discharged into the sea about 1 kilometer offshore through an underwater tunnel by July 24.

This is the 21st such discharge since the beginning of releases into the ocean in 2023. A total of about 62,400 tons will be released in eight phases throughout the fiscal year.

According to tests conducted by TEPCO and the Japanese government, "the concentration of tritium in seawater and marine products is below Japan's national standards."
