Germany is greatly expanding its military armaments.
Earlier this year, Mertz received parliamentary support to lift the debt ceiling on defense spending stipulated by the German constitution, allowing the government to fund military modernization. It is expected that Germany's regular defense budget will increase to about 83 billion euros in 2026, an increase of 20 billion euros from 2025.
Germany is preparing to place hundreds of billions in military procurement orders, including 20 Eurofighter Typhoon fighter jets, 1,000 Leopard 2 tanks, nearly 400 Jaguar infantry fighting vehicles, about 500 engineering vehicles, up to 3,000 Boxer armored vehicles, and up to 3,500 Patria armored vehicles.
According to sources, the order for the Eurofighter alone is worth between 4 billion and 5 billion euros, the Boxer is approximately 10 billion euros, and the Patria is valued at around 7 billion euros.
The German Ministry of Defense also plans to purchase additional IRIS-T air defense systems and hundreds of SkyRanger units for drone defense, although the financial details of these procurements have not yet been determined, according to sources.
