Korean Media: Japanese Natto Exports Surge, China Leads Consumption!

On May 5, South Korean media outlet Global Economy published an article stating that Japan's natto export value is rapidly increasing, exceeding 3 billion yen annually. Notably, China has surpassed the United States to become the largest importer, with import volumes growing 2.5 times compared to the previous year.

In 2025, Japan's natto exports reached 3.2 billion yen, an increase of 1 billion yen from the prior year. Of this, exports to China surged by 500 million yen within a single year, significantly driving overall market growth.

Regarding demand, online shopping platforms and health trends have played a key role.

Natto was once avoided by some due to its distinctive smell and sticky texture, but it has recently been rediscovered as a health food and rapidly gained popularity in ordinary Chinese households.

Additionally, increasing numbers of tourists visiting Japan have tried natto during hotel breakfasts and continued seeking it out after returning home, contributing further to its rising demand.

According to Asahi Shimbun, Japanese natto has already established a strong presence in local supermarkets in Shenzhen and other southern regions of China. With more locals adopting daily consumption for health reasons, natto exports are expected to continue growing in the short term.
