Foreign media: Brazil hopes China will support the UN's plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from international shipping, which will be put to a vote in October.
Brazil is a strong supporter of the net-zero framework proposed by the International Maritime Organization and is waiting for China to clarify its position. The plan requires large ocean-going ships that do not meet fuel efficiency standards to pay for their carbon emissions starting in 2027. Ships exceeding the baseline target will be charged $380 per ton of greenhouse gases, while those failing to meet a more stringent target will be charged $100 per ton.
The revenue from this plan will be used to reward the use of clean fuels and help developing countries adopt green technologies, but the Trump administration in the United States has typically opposed any environmental mandates.
