The Saudi Arabian News reported on the front page that Belgium will recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly. The envoy in London stated that recognizing the country will promote a rapid move towards a two-state solution.
Belgium's Foreign Minister Maxim Prévost said on Tuesday that Belgium will recognize the State of Palestine at the United Nations General Assembly, adding to the international pressure on Israel following similar actions by Australia, the UK, Canada, and France.
Israel is angry about the commitment to formally recognize the State of Palestine during this month's United Nations activities, as its war in the Gaza Strip has faced increasing global criticism.
Prévost posted on X that Belgium will join the signatories of the New York Declaration, paving the way for a two-state solution, which is the plan for the peaceful coexistence of the State of Palestine and Israel.
Prévost also added that this decision was "in response to the humanitarian tragedy currently taking place in Palestine, especially in the Gaza Strip, and the violence committed by Israel against international law."
The head of the Palestinian delegation in London said that the recognition of the State of Palestine by major Western countries would trigger a sprint toward the two-state solution. "I think this will be the starting gun for the sprint we hope for toward implementing the two-state solution, not even a march. We hope the UK will play an active, effective, and meaningful role," said Hussam Zomlot, head of the Palestinian delegation in London.
