Foreign media: The Shanghai startup Carbonology claims to have mastered the low-cost technology of synthesizing petroleum from air and water. It can combine captured carbon dioxide with hydrogen produced by water electrolysis, and use solar and wind energy to convert it into artificial gasoline, diesel, aviation kerosene, and naphtha, with costs now reduced to a level competitive with market prices.

The company was co-founded by a former vice president of Tesla in 2024, and is now preparing to build large-scale production facilities in China.

This technology belongs to the direct air capture (DAC) field. Although it has moved from the laboratory to reality, most of the captured greenhouse gases are currently stored underground rather than converted into fuel, and its commercial viability is still questioned by some experts.
