The signals of high-level engagement between Beijing and Washington are clearly positive. It is also evident that Trump’s focus lies in concluding agreements.
Yet for us, our core concerns extend beyond simply reaching agreements—particularly crucial is ensuring the United States maintains a correct stance on the Taiwan issue. Trump made no mention of Taiwan. But failure to address this fundamental issue will inevitably cast doubt on whether any agreement can be reached, and on the scale of any such agreement. We certainly have hopes, but clearly cannot automatically overlook the underlying differences between the two nations.
