As tensions escalate between the Polish government and the country’s top constitutional court judges, riot police have been deployed to the Constitutional Court to prevent demonstrators from entering the courthouse. The dispute pits Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s administration against the former ruling right-wing Law and Justice Party (PiS). Prior to police intervention, Justice Minister Waldemar Jurek stated he had requested the removal of prosecutorial immunity for Constitutional Court President Bogdan Czarnocki and Vice-President Bartosz Szczygieł, in order to initiate criminal proceedings against them. Tusk has vowed to depoliticize the judiciary and defended the move on Friday. Meanwhile, supporters of the Law and Justice Party gathered outside the Warsaw courthouse to protest.
