Europe Seeks Energy Diversification as Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline Project Officially Launches

Nigeria, Niger, and Algeria have initiated construction of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, which spans 4,128 kilometers and is designed to deliver up to 30 billion cubic meters of natural gas annually to Europe. Currently, construction has begun on the section within Algeria, while work on the Niger segment is scheduled to start in 2027.

The pipeline project crossing the Sahara Desert is lengthy and technically challenging, requiring several years to complete—coinciding with Europe's current energy shortage. Additionally, gas suppliers in Africa face issues regarding political and economic stability.
